Art of Cool Festival 2018

Want to be a Cooligan?

We’re looking for cool, enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers who are committed to helping make the Art of Cool Festival the most incredible community experience the Triangle has ever seen!

What is a Cooligan?

Our amazing volunteers (aka Cooligans) have been the heart of Art of Cool from the very beginning. Cooligans are committed to Art of Cool’s mission and really strive to engage with the community. Not only do Cooligans make the festival happen, but our volunteers are present throughout the year, helping Art of Cool’s partners at other events around the Triangle. With your help, we can really promote our area’s creative and cultural potential and keep the Triangle -and downtown Durham- cool.  The size and scope of the Festival footprint means that volunteer support will be needed like never before to help deliver an amazing and efficient Festival experience.

Are Cooligans rewarded?

Volunteers will receive an exclusive Art of Cool Festival Cooligans t-shirt, free admission to select performances during non-committed hours on the day they are scheduled to work, and a special volunteer discount on the purchase of 2017 Art of Cool Festival tickets. Please note that priority admission will be given to paying Festival attendees. Volunteers receive no monetary compensation for their services.

Volunteer Guidelines

Volunteers must be:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be dependable and punctual.
  • Attend a pre-festival training session
  • Volunteer a minimum of 5 hours of service over the Festival weekend.

Ready to be Cool?

All Art of Cool Project volunteer opportunities are scheduled through the Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau Wayfinders volunteer program. To register as an Art of Cool volunteer, you
will need to create an account at:
and select The Art of Cool Project as your Participating Organization team.  After you have completed your registration, and attended a mandatory Wayfinder orientation, you will receive email notifications when volunteer shifts for the festival and other AOC volunteer opportunities throughout the year are posted and available for you to sign up for shifts.

If you are already registered with the Durham Wayfinders Volunteer Program, be sure that you have added The Art of Cool Project to your list of volunteer teams.

How will I know if I have been chosen to be an Art of Cool Project volunteer?

All applicants will be notified through the Durham Wayfinders volunteer program.

Will I be trained?

There will be volunteer training sessions prior to the Festival. At minimum, attendance is required at one session. These trainings may also include some position specific training sessions if applicable.

During the Festival, you will work under the supervision of our incomparable Volunteer Team Leaders as well as members of the Art of Cool staff.

Are there opportunities to work other events besides the Festival?

Attendance at events with Art of Cool’s various partners is strongly suggested. We are looking for people who are really interested in helping the cultural and creative growth of this community. Priority volunteer opportunities and other perks are available for stellar and returning volunteers.
