West Coast emcee Kendrick Lamar is a big name these days, but when you take a closer look, he’s still affecting the local music scene whether you realize it or not. 2015 was the year of To Pimp a Butterfly, Lamar’s third studio album; unlike his preceding projects, To Pimp a Butterfly was rooted more in funk and jazz, which is where The Art of Cool comes into play.
Last year’s AOC Festival had a lineup that boasted names like Robert Glasper. Anthony Hamilton, Snarky Puppy, and Jesse Boykins III; what is notable, however, are the names that have worked on TPaB that Art of Cool has presented in the past, which include:
- Robert Glasper
- Terrace Martin
- Kamasi Washington
AOCFest 2016 welcomes Thundercat back (AOCFEST 2014 Alumnus), as well as another Kendrick Lamar contributor: Kamasi Washington. Although his name is not currently on the 2016 lineup, we also had the pleasure of listening to TPaB producer Terrace Martin at The Pour House in Raleigh last week. Towards the end of the evening, Martin covered a song that he and Thundercat created called “Heartbreaks & Setbacks,” which was created during seasons of hardship and uncertainty. Below you can watch a short clip of the cover:
