The profile of Anderson .Paak, who has also released an album under the name ‘Lovejoy’, skyrocketed this spring, as sought-after showcases at South by Southwest led to a highly-anticipated performance in downtown Durham at the Art of Cool Festival in May. I caught a few songs from .Paak and his band, The Free Nationals, at City Plaza, which was packed. Between songs, the singer/rapper/drummer/producer said “I thought I was going to see more black people in the audience” but went on to say “we’re gonna have a good ass time”, which is exactly what he delivered.
It’s no wonder white audiences love him, too. His work is jazzy, funky, danceable, lyrically compelling, West Coast hip hop. He dances, raps, croons, hops behind his stage left drum kit (his first instrument) and keeps singing. After Malibu, it’ll be interesting to hear and see what’s next.
