This week’s AOC artist of the week is the lovely Ester Rada! She is a native of Kiryat Arba located in the West Bank of Israel. Ester is married to Gili Yalu, a singer in the Israeli reggae band “Zvuloon Dub System”.
The 29-year-old singer/songwriter grow up in a Jewish family that modeled modest religious conditions that motivated Rada to kick-start her music career. Ester Rada acknowledges her musical influences from great female artists such as Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgearld, Lauryn Hill, Eryka Badu, and Jill Scott.
In 2013, Ester Rada released her first solo EP titled “Life Happens” that MTV broadcasted in France, East Europe and Israel. Easter Rada credits the mastermind Israeli producers Kuti and Sabbo who helped with the “Life Happens” project alongside her band. Critics describe her music as combined genres of Funk, Ethio-Jazz, Neo-Soul, R&B, plus undertones of black groove. The “cross-cultural” sound of her music gives fans a deep reflection of the Israeli born Ethiopian’s heritage.
Ester Rada has toured across countries such as Europe, Canada, and the United States obtaining worldwide popularity. This tour landed Rada a nomination for MTV ‘s EMA award for Best Israeli Act. Alongside her music career Rada also has won awards in her acting career for her role in the film “The Troupe” produced by the Habima Theatre. Rada has also acted in the TV show “Deus”, and in the 2007 play “Sdakim Bebeton”. Ester Rada contributes a new voice to soul plus a musical movement that brings a positive influence into the generation.
